Asia's macro mecca. Lembeh is world-famous for rare bottom critters — not for beginners, but essential for photographers. Bunaken and Bangka round it out with wall dives.

About Sulawesi
North Sulawesi has two completely different worlds within a two-hour drive. Lembeh — a strait that looks like a dive graveyard with black bottom — is the best muck diving in the world. Bunaken Marine Park on the other side of Manado is classic wall and reef diving.
We recommend combining: 4–5 nights in Lembeh followed by 4–5 nights at Bunaken or Bangka.
When to go
March to November. April–June is best for macro in Lembeh. August–October has the most settled sea for the Bunaken wall. December–February is rainy season.
What to know
- Lembeh isn’t for everyone. Black sand, 5–15 m visibility, cold bottom water — and it’s all about spotting small things. Brilliant for photographers, dull for divers who want big fish.
- Bunaken has steep vertical wall diving, often with current. Good buoyancy is required.

- Transfers between Lembeh and Bunaken go via Manado airport, plan for 2–3 hours.
Good fit if you
Take photos, have 20+ dives, are bored with “routine reef dives” and want the unusual.
Skip if you
Are after big fish, mantas, or sharks — Sulawesi isn’t that destination. Also skip if you’re a beginner — Lembeh needs experience to actually pay off.
Land activities
The Minahasa highlands near Manado — coffee farms, Lake Tondano, traditional food culture. Tomohon market is famously intense and not everyone can stomach the sight. Tangkoko Reserve for tarsiers and black macaques.
