Raja Ampat
The world's most species-rich coral reef. More fish species on a single dive here than anywhere else on Earth. Reached via Sorong, divable both by liveaboard and from resort.

About Raja Ampat
“The Four Kings” — an archipelago in West Papua with four main islands and over 1,500 smaller ones. Fish density and species count are higher here than anywhere else on Earth. Cape Kri holds the record: 374 species on a single dive.
Raja Ampat can be dived two ways: from a mainland resort (good for first-timers to Raja, limited range) or by liveaboard (the only way to reach Misool and the remote sites). We recommend liveaboard for anyone with more than 30 logged dives.
When to go
October to April. November–March gives the most stable weather and best visibility (25–35 m in the north). Manta sightings peak January–March. July–September closes southern Misool due to swell — the route is then limited to northern Dampier Strait.
What to know
- Currents are the rule, not the exception. SMB, reef hook, and drift experience are required.
- Long travel: From Stockholm/Europe → Jakarta → Sorong = 30+ hours. Build in a recovery day in Sorong or Waisai before diving.
- The price range is wide. A simple liveaboard (Ambai) sits around 40,000 SEK, luxury (Arenui, Dune) 75,000+. Day boats from Sorido Bay Resort run about 35,000 for 10 days.
- Nitrox is effectively required for 3–4 dives a day. Pick an operator where it’s included.
Good fit if you
Have 30+ logged dives, are comfortable in current, can set aside at least 12 days total, and prioritize the diving over the comfort.
Skip if you
Have under 30 dives, get seasick and have never tried a liveaboard, or want to fit in land activities — there’s nothing here but diving.
Land activities
Few. The Piaynemo viewpoint from a karst formation is almost always part of liveaboard programs. The village of Arborek offers a low-key cultural stop. No shopping, no nightlife — and that’s the point.
