Koh Lanta Yai is a long island in Krabi province with a west coast full of beaches and a remote southern position. Works best for day diving — liveaboards rarely run from Lanta.

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are the reason you come here. Two underwater pinnacles out in the Andaman Sea, 2.5 hours by boat. The water around them is deep — the pinnacles themselves run from the surface down past 60 meters. Manta visits are common, whale shark sightings sporadic.

Season

November to April. Outside that window the Hin Daeng operators close — the boat ride gets too rough in monsoon swell.

What to know

• Day boats to Hin Daeng/Muang are long runs (12+ hours round-trip). Pack lunch, sunscreen, seasickness pills.
• Koh Rok and Koh Haa are closer and a fallback when current at Hin Daeng is too strong.
• Koh Lanta is less developed than Phuket — no shopping mall, fewer restaurants. Many see that as an upside.
• Transfer from Krabi airport: about 2 hours, including two short ferries. Or 2.5 hours by boat from Phuket.

Good fit if you

Want a shot at big fish, want to skip Phuket traffic, are comfortable diving in current, traveling in high season (Dec–Mar).

Skip if you

Are traveling outside the season, are a beginner who needs calm day diving (pick Koh Tao instead).

Land activities

Lanta Old Town (traditional fishing village, old wooden houses), jungle hiking in Mu Ko Lanta National Park, elephant sanctuary (no riding), kayaking to nearby small islands.
