The least visited serious dive region in Indonesia. Liveaboards from Ternate cover southern Halmahera, Bacan, and the Banda Sea. Few other boats, untouched.

About this route
Halmahera is one of Indonesia’s largest islands but almost completely off the radar for dive tourism. Departures from Ternate (flight from Manado) head south through the straits to Bacan and on toward Banda.
Season
September to April. Outside that window the operators close down.
What to know
- The price sits high (55,000+ SEK) despite simpler boat standards — few operators, premium market.
- The route in is long: Stockholm → Jakarta → Manado → Ternate = 32+ hours.
- Very few boats dive here. You share the site with the ocean, not other groups.
- The Banda extension (10+3 nights) suits people interested in history — colonial backstory plus diving.
Good fit if you
Already dived Raja Ampat and Komodo, want the most untouched diving available, have the time (14+ days) and the budget.
