Halmahera and Ambon
The Banda Sea and the Moluccas — the remote part of Indonesia that Raja Ampat used to be ten years ago. A macro paradise with very few other boats.

About the region
Halmahera lies north of Sulawesi, Ambon southeast of Sulawesi. Together they cover the Moluccas — the “spice islands” Europeans fought over in the 1600s. Today: one of the least-visited serious dive regions in Indonesia.
Diving is almost exclusively by liveaboard. Ambon has a few land-based options (Maluku Divers) for dedicated muck diving.
When to go
September to April. November–March has the best sea state. Outside that window most operators close.
What to know
- Remote. Travel: From Stockholm/Europe → Jakarta → Ternate or Ambon = 28+ hours.
- Land-based Ambon is almost pure muck — black sand, macro, no reefs.
- Halmahera liveaboards are typically longer (10–12 nights) due to the distances.
- The price is higher than Raja Ampat for equivalent standard — few operators, premium.
Good fit if you
Have already dived Raja Ampat and want to go further, shoot macro, look for places with no other traffic, have time (at least 14 days total including travel).

Are on your first Indonesia trip — start with Bali, Komodo, or Raja Ampat.
Land activities
Banda Islands: nutmeg plantations and Fort Belgica are worth half a day. Ambon city has a fort and a cathedral but is mostly a transit town. Halmahera is sparsely populated with few tourist facilities — come for the dives, not for the land activities.
